Canoeing, kayaking, and paddle boarding are three of MN’s favorite water activities. People travel from all over to enjoy the lake country around New London, and we see the lakes teeming with watercraft of all kinds.

But what if you don’t own your canoe? What if you are a kayaking beginner, unsure if you like the sport? What if you’ve never even tried paddle boarding?

Sibley State Park is the ideal place to enjoy kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddle boarding. And it’s all only 11 miles from New London, MN! No need to travel to a faraway destination.

You can bring your own canoe or kayak, but if you’re new to water sports, you can learn how to kayak, canoe, or even paddleboard by renting. How many times have you wanted to try out something new but weren’t sure if it was worth purchasing everything necessary? Spending time on the water using Sibley State Park rental equipment is the perfect way to “try before you buy.”

Canoe/Kayak and Paddleboard rentals are available at the Beach Store starting Memorial weekend each year. How convenient. Nothing to haul!

Sometimes, you want to include more friends in the party, not all of whom have their own gear. Set your worries aside. Renting allows for friends or family to join the experience. And life jackets come with all rental equipment, so you’re covered for safety.

There’s a canoe route for explorers to check out if you want a more extended experience. Canoe enthusiasts can portage and canoe on Lake Andrew, Middle Lake, Lake Henschien, and Swan Lake.

Before you start your day, however, we’d recommend making a pit stop for breakfast at  The Sweet River Cafe on 34 Main Ave in New London. Great homemade food (with a gourmet flair) featuring what many claim to be the best caramel rolls found anywhere.

You’ll be tempted to pack an array of their other delicious pastries for your trip. Stop in for a full breakfast or a latte with your Pastries. You can find mouthwatering photos on Facebook.

And of course, after the day is over, why not swing into the Deep Freeze at 10 4th Ave SE., New London. This is a family-owned and operated ice cream shop that’s been voted the best ice cream in central MN for the last 4 years.

Sundaes, cones, shakes – all available any way you like it. And they also have fantastic BBQ pork sandwiches, hot dogs, and polish sausage. It’s the perfect place to indulge yourself after your kayaking or canoeing adventures on the lake. Check out their new items and features for the week, and have a fun water adventure day in New London.
